The library of the Research and Education Centre of the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum is one of Moscow’s major museum libraries. It has been open since March 2023 and works for a broad readership: both specialists studying Bulgakov’s life and work and visitors discovering the writer for the first time.
Library holdings
The museum library collection currently includes more than 14,000 items:
- books, collections, journal and newspaper publications about M.A. Bulgakov’s life and work, Bulgakov texts in Russian and other languages, and other materials connected with the writer;
- scholarly and popular humanities literature: history, philology, philosophy, art, theatre history, cinema, music, and related fields;
- Russian and international fiction;
- sheet music editions.
The library also includes personal collections of Bulgakov scholars. Books and publications from the library of Marietta Omarovna and Alexander Pavlovich Chudakov form part of the permanent display at the Research and Education Centre, “Marietta Chudakova’s Memorial Study”.
Literary scholar and historian Marietta Chudakova prepared the scholarly description of M.A. Bulgakov’s archive at the V.I. Lenin State Library in 1976 and wrote the first scholarly biography of the writer, The Life of Mikhail Bulgakov, published in 1988. She was also one of the founders of the Bulgakov museum in Moscow.
Newspaper clippings and periodicals
The newspaper clipping and periodical collections include articles about Bulgakov’s life and work and publications of his texts gathered by researchers and collectors, including B.S. Myagkov, G.S. Faiman, E.N. Monakhova, A.P. Burenin, and others. One of the museum’s goals is to create a full-text electronic resource database from these materials, with remote and local access.
How to use the library
The library collection is regularly updated with new books from leading publishers.
Most publications are available on open shelves. Visitors can read and work with them in the Centre’s reading rooms, and some books may also be borrowed.
The museum is a partner of the National Electronic Library and provides access to its materials inside the Research and Education Centre.
You can check book availability in the library’s electronic catalogue or by phone: +7 495 697-11-70.
