Writing desk

Wood, carving, lacquer. The end of the 19th century, Russia.

This massive carved writing desk with two pedestals never stood in Bulgakov’s room and belonged to the writer’s uncle, a famous doctor, N. M. Pokrovsky. Bulgakov visited him quite often and, of course, the desk was very familiar to him. But one can say with certainty that this is also a desk of Bulgakov’s characters as professor Preobrazhensky from the novel «Heart of a Dog» borrowed many features from his prototype, N. M. Pokrovsky. The table was presented by Pokrovsky to Mikhail Bulgakov’s younger sister Elena on her wedding day. Acquired in 2008 from Mikhail Bulgakov Charitable Foundation.
